A View at Some of the Garden Trends for 2009

One of the latest gardening trends is actually going back to the basics and creating a garden not just for beauty but actually for nourishment. There are many reasons for this current trend. Every one is going green and trying to be more environmentally as well as health conscious. Grocery prices have increased quite a bit over the past few years. Many want to ensure that their food is actually being grown in an organic way. The economy along with predictions that things are only to get worse before they get better, has got many wanting to develop a green thumb.

“The popular ’grow your own’ approach to fruit and veg will certainly continue as we all look to reconnect ourselves with nature, save a few quid and increase the understanding of where our food comes from,” says Joe Swift, Author of Joe’s Urban Garden Handbook and design director of Modular Garden

Window Box Enthusiasm

Here are this weeks tips and ideas for your window boxes:

There are a several flowers that are ideal for window boxes. Such as: alyssum, geraniums, marigolds and trilliums. These flowers are low growing flowers that are sun friendly. If your window boxes are stored in a shaded area you may want to plant begonias and fuchsias. In the winter consider adding miniature evergreens to your window boxes to keep the green thumb going.

-If you don’t have a PVC window box and your window box is made of wood, you can preserve the life of your box by adding a tarp lining prior to adding your planting mix.

-For good drainage drill a few holes in the bottom of the window boxes.

-During hot summer months water flower boxes daily then, follow-up every few weeks with fertilizer.
